Frisbee

Frisbee? Yes Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee.

As a kid, growing up in the free-spirited 60's and 70's, we always had a Frisbee floating around. I remember winning the "Frisbee throw for distance" as a kid at day-camp, at Community Field in Litchfield.

As a young adult, on the commons of UVM's Redstone Campus, Frisbee was the game of choice for me and my buddies. So any spare time, if it wasn't snowing, or if it wasn't study time, it was Frisbee.

For the past 10 years - as an old guy - I've been playing ultimate Frisbee once a week from April to October.

There's this email list, with 100 names on it (just let me know, I can add yours...). Each week, from April to October, an email goes out on Thurday morning. "...Frisbee today. Sedgwick Middle School. 6:00. Rain or shine. Be there...." Over the course of 10 years, we've never had less than 6 people show up every Thursday night. And it's typically upwards of 15-20 guys. Awesome.

It's the worst thing for you....

I'm at my doc's office, for my annual physical a few years ago. He asks me what type of exercise I'm getting. I tell him I take the dog for a brisk walk every morning. I might go for a run once every few weeks. And I play ultimate Frisbee once a week with a bunch of buddies. "A weekend warrior; that's the worst thing for you," he says. "All that extreme starting and stopping; muscle pulls; backache; laying out for a disk. You could get really hurt."

I hear what you're saying doc, but let me tell you. The sweat; the heart pumping; the camaraderie and the light-hearted jousting; a couple of beers afterward. And the rain? Rain's the best. Nothing like layin' out for the disk into a puddle of mud. It's all good.

No, really doc, it's the best thing for me.

So yeah, Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee. The game of choice.
